Changes at LENScience

11 March 2013

This year we have been able to offer places on our Face-to-Face Day Programme to every school that applied.  Over 8,000 students will be taught in our two state-of-the-art classrooms.  LENScience Director Jacquie Bay said "This is a great step forward.  Opening a second classroom has allowed us to expand on the learning that occurs in schools across the region.  Students leave our classroom with an increased understanding of science and scientific principles, a better undertstanding of what scientists do and a deeper understanding of the scientific method."

We've also had a change in teaching staff.  We regretfully farewelled Helen Mora, Tarewa Williams and Janet Lee, all of whom have taken up teaching positions elsewhere.

We welcome Chandar Dewan who joins us on secondment from Tamaki College.  Chandar is an experienced senior biology and general science teacher with 17 years teaching experience in New Zealand low decile secondary schools. He is joining the LENScience team as a Professional Teaching Fellow, with responsibilities of the delivery and development of the LENScience teaching programmes in the LENScience classrooms.

Patsy Hindson is a Professional Teaching Fellow within the LENScience team at the Liggins Institute. Patsy's primary role is to design and develop e-learning resources for teachers and students within the LENScience Healthy Start to Life Programme. During 2013 this work will be funded by a grant from the Dick Roberts Community Trust.  This year Patsy will produce a professional development programme for middle school teachers to engage with LENScience learning modules. This programme will use a blended e-learning model combining self-paced virtual learning together with learning events that bring teachers from throughout New Zealand together on-line and in their local community, face to face.
