LENScience Bio-Med Summer School 2012

12 March 2013

Our residential Bio-Med Summer School Programme held in December last year provided a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity for 40 high school students to spend five days immersed in the community and culture of science. The Year 13 students were selected on a competitive basis from Decile 1-4 schools or students with Maori or Pacific ancestry, who plan to study science at any New Zealand University.

The programme introduces students to the realities and expectations of university life, equipping them with academic and social skills and networks to support them through the transition from school to tertiary study. The demanding programme included lectures, workshops, inspiring speakers, healthy living practices and team work. Former participants of the summer school return to undertake mentor roles that require learning leadership skills.

This year’s group was tasked with exploring the non-communicable disease epidemic from the point of view of their generation and devising community action projects to build awareness and positive behaviour change.

The best four proposals displayed very high levels of understanding and innovation in the ways the students had collaborate together to develop workable strategies to make changes in their communities.

The programme’s impressive outcomes reflect the enormous commitment of the LENScience team in taking on such a challenge and inspiring the next generation of scientists.
