On July 4, The Honorable Dr Pita Sharples will launch the first LENScience learning module available in te reo Māori. Ko Au, Ko Au Anō, Ko Tōku Taiao: Te Kai is a translation of Me, Myself, My Environment: Nutrition that has been made possible through partnership between LENScience and Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Raki Paewhenua.

Led by Marama Tuuta and Peter Muir, the team from Te Raki Paewhenua carried out preliminary translation of learning activities within the original English version of the module to explore their potential within a kura setting. Following their recommendation to proceed, and with the support of a grant from The University of Auckland’s Department of Māori Health, Mrs Hariata Pouhatu was engaged to lead the translation. The learning resource, which in its English form has been proven to support scientific and health literacy development leading to students taking action in relation to their dietary and activity behaviours, will now be available for use in kura and Māori immersion communities throughout New Zealand.

LENScience is grateful to the extensive support offered by Marama Tuuta, Peter Muir, Hariata Pouhatu and the kaiako and support staff at Te Raki Paewhenua. In partnership with Te Raki Paewhenua, we are now seeking funding to enable the development of web resources and professional learning and development resources in te reo Māori.
