On July 4, LENScience Director, Jacquie Bay, and former LENScience Teaching and Learning Manager, Helen Mora, will gift to Te Puni Kōkiri the updated edition of the Year 11 LENScience learning module “Type 2 Diabetes: An issue for my community” offering Te Puni Kōkiri the opportunity to facilitate the translation of this validated learning module designed for Year 11 classes. At the same time the newly published teachers' guide will become available for purchase by schools throughout New Zealand.

The module evolved from a workshop with Year 10 students from Tamaki College, Onehunga High School, Diocesan School for Girls and St Cuthbert’s College in December 2007. The students were all participants in the first LENScience Students as Researchers Programme, and were brought together to brainstorm ideas for a learning context for Year 11 that would explore the use of science knowledge in society, and be of interest to Year 11 students across a broad range of New Zealand communities.

Trials conducted in 2008 and 2009 with stakeholder schools led to the development of the module, further trials of learning resources and teacher support materials in 2010 and finally the development of a NZQA QAAM approved assessment task led by Helen Mora in 2011 and the publication of the complete module and teachers' guide in 2013. This work has been made possible by funding from Gravida – National Centre for Growth and Development and Te Puni Kōkiri.
